Introduction

Every product and resource on this page is something I personally use or have used. Nothing here is recommended because someone paid me to say it — these are the actual tools in my lawn and garden routine. Some links are affiliate links, which means I earn a small commission if you purchase through them at no extra cost to you. That commission helps keep Soil Smarter running and the newsletter free. The links below are general links, so if the companies move or adjust links, the links below won’t need to be updated each time.

Soil Testing

Soil testing is the foundation of everything at Soil Smarter. Without knowing what your soil actually needs, everything else is guesswork. These are the testing options I recommend:

Yard Mastery Soil Test Kit

This is the soil test I use personally. You collect your sample, mail it to the lab, and get back a detailed digital report with specific product recommendations based on your actual results. The recommendations integrate directly with Yard Mastery's product line which makes it easy to act on your results without having to research what to buy. Thorough, accurate, and worth every penny.

Penn State Extension Soil Testing

If you're in Pennsylvania, Penn State Extension offers soil testing for $9–$20 depending on the test package. It's one of the best values in lawn care — university lab accuracy at a fraction of the cost of private labs. Results come with Penn State's recommendations which are well suited to PA soil conditions. Highly recommended for PA homeowners looking for a budget friendly option.

Lawn Timing Tools

GreenCast Online — Soil Temperature Tracker

The free tool I use to time every lawn application. Enter your zip code, set up email alerts for key soil temperature thresholds, and GreenCast tells you exactly when to apply pre-emergent, fertilizer, and grass seed. Built for golf course superintendents, now used by smart homeowners. Completely free and in my opinion the single most useful lawn tool available online. We covered this in depth in Issue #3.

Fertilizers, Pre-Emergent & Soil Amendments

Prodiamine Pre-Emergent — Yard Mastery

Prodiamine is the active ingredient in most professional-grade pre-emergent herbicides and Yard Mastery's version is what I use personally. I apply it in water soluble form through my boom sprayer for even, consistent coverage across my 30,000 square feet of turf. For most homeowners a granular pre-emergent is the more practical choice — easier to apply with a broadcast spreader and very effective. Yard Mastery carries both options.

Lime — Calcitic or Dolomitic

For pH correction I pick up lime at my local hardware store — Home Depot, Lowes, and most farm supply stores carry both calcitic and dolomitic lime at reasonable prices. Check your soil test results to determine which type you need. Calcitic lime raises pH and adds calcium. Dolomitic lime raises pH and adds both calcium and magnesium. Your soil test report will specify which is right for your situation.

Mushroom Soil — Local Landscape Supply

Mushroom soil is spent mushroom compost — one of the best organic soil amendments available for both lawns and garden beds. It adds organic matter, improves soil structure, and feeds soil biology. I source mine from a local landscape and mulch supply company where you can buy it by the cubic yard at a fraction of the cost of bagged products. Check your local bulk landscape supply company — call ahead and ask if they carry mushroom soil or spent mushroom compost. Most areas have at least one supplier within reasonable driving distance.

Equipment & Tools

Scotts Elite Broadcast Spreader

My broadcast spreader of choice for applying granular fertilizers, lime, grass seed, and granular pre-emergent. The Scotts Elite is well built, holds a large capacity, and spreads evenly — which matters a lot when you're trying to apply products at precise rates based on your soil test recommendations. A quality spreader is one of those tools worth spending a little more on because uneven application defeats the purpose of data-driven lawn care.

Fimco 20 Gallon Pull-Behind Boom Sprayer

For larger properties this pull-behind boom sprayer is a game changer. I manage approximately 30,000 square feet of turf and the Fimco 20 gallon boom sprayer lets me apply liquid products — including water soluble pre-emergent and liquid fertilizers — evenly and efficiently in a fraction of the time a hand sprayer would take. Available at Tractor Supply. If you have a riding mower and more than half an acre to treat, this is worth serious consideration.

Cub Cadet ZT1 50" Zero Turn Mower

My mower of choice for managing a large property efficiently. The 50 inch deck covers ground fast and the zero turn maneuverability makes working around trees, beds, and obstacles much more efficient than a traditional riding mower. For properties over 1 acre a zero turn mower is a significant time saver. Cub Cadet's build quality has been solid in my experience.

Learning Resources

The Lawn Care Nut — Yard Mastery

Hands down the best lawn care educator I've found. His YouTube channel and the Yard Mastery platform cover lawn care at a depth most homeowners never knew existed — soil science, fertilizer programs, application timing, grass identification, and more. Nearly everything I know about data-driven lawn care traces back to his content in some way. If you want to go deeper than what Soil Smarter covers week to week, start here.

Penn State Extension

Penn State Extension is one of the best free resources available for Pennsylvania homeowners. Soil testing, lawn care guides, vegetable gardening advice, pest identification, and more — all specific to Pennsylvania conditions and growing zones. Bookmark it and use it.
